A couple weeks ago, Riot's parents took the kids to Khao Kheow Open Zoo. It is in Chonburi Province about half way between Bangkok and Pattaya. The trip took them about 60 minutes from the house.
It has all the regular animals that you would want to see such as giraffe, elephant, tiger, lion, chimpanzee, camel etc. It also allows you to get up close to these animals. There are many opportunities where you can feed the animals, which the kids loved. Anya was a little braver than Aden in getting closer to feed them. Food was available for the animals at a very reasonable 20 baht per bunch. They fed the Hippo cucumbers and Giraffe string beans. It is a huge zoo, so you need to drive around in a car, take a tram, or rent a golf cart.
Here are a few facts about the zoo: Khao Kheow Open Zoo (150 km east of Bangkok) was established as a unit of the Zoological Park Organization of Thailand on June 1st, 1978 as an open zoo with an area of 5,000 Rai or 2000 acres. The animal exhibits alone cover an area of 400 acres. In the Khao Kheow animal sanctuary, there are 300 species of animals with a population of 6000 lives. Unlike the normal zoo, the animals at this open zoo are not kept inside cages.
As you see on last picture, Aden lost one of his shoes so Grandpa ended up holding him the whole time, which we think Aden did not mind at all.
