Getaway trip Day II

Day 2:
Bald Head Island
It can be reached only by ferry, which is a short 20 minute trip from Southport. Visitor transportation choices are only by walking or renting a golf cart. No private, gas-powered vehicles are allowed on the island. It was a very quiet and peaceful place! We drove around and saw some nice houses and walked on the beach. It was still a little too chilly to hang out on the beach for long. We also visited its famous land mark – Old Baldy Lighthouse. Built in 1817, it is North Carolina’s oldest lighthouse. During her 86 years of service, she guided many ships safely into the mouth of the Cape Fear River. She was retired in 1935. The top of the lighthouse is very small. David, with a camera bag, almost did not make it through. We could view the whole island from the top.







Wilmington
We got back to Southport in the early afternoon and decided to have a late lunch in Wilmington. We ate at The George on the Riverwalk in downtown and had fried green tomatoes, soft-shell crab, and pineapple chicken. It was a very nice day to sit outside for people and boat watching. After lunch, we headed back home.
