We took a 15 minute ferry to Cape Lookout. It is part of the Cape Lookout National Seashore and is protected from commercial development. Cape Lookout is the southern point of the South Core Banks, one of the natural barrier islands on the Atlantic coast of North Carolina. While we were on the ferry, we spotted a few dolphins. Everybody was so excited! Close to Cape Lookout, there were wild horses on the Shackleford Banks (http://www.shacklefordhorses.org/about.htm). It is believed that they swam ashore off Spanish sinking ships 400 years ago.
Since there is no commercial development, we needed to bring our own food and drinks and clean up after ourselves. The beach is very private. There were not as many people as we expected for such a long weekend. Everybody enjoyed the beach, sun, and fun!
We cooked our fishes for dinner and went to the nearby beach to watch fireworks and to light some of our own. We were very close to where they shot the fireworks so we pretty much had to lay down and watch it. It was a really great fireworks display.
